| 内容記述 | For effective regional revitalization, it is essential to foster environments where cultural creation can occur continuously. This entails generating wealth, employment, economic activity, and technological advancement through the creativity, skills, and talents of individuals. In recent years, there has been a renewed focus on the potential of local crafts within a comprehensive policy framework encompassing not only commerce, industry, and labor, but also culture and tourism. Within this context, crafts are increasingly regarded as a catalyst for regional revitalization. However, the craft sector is facing significant challenges. The value of production in this sector had declined by more than 80% by 2017 compared to its peak in 1983. Specifically, the ceramics sector peaked at 149.6 billion yen in 1996 but had fallen by 85.4% as of 2020. This paper aims to summarize the worsening conditions and challenges facing Japan’s craft and ceramics industries. It also examines the history, production, and distribution of Echizen ware—recognized as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns—and focuses on the case of Jakushu-You (operated by ceramist Mrs. Tobinaga Nao) (Note 1) in the Reinan (Wakasa) region of Fukui Prefecture. Jakushu-You successfully established a business in the crafts sector under difficult circumstances, offering valuable insights into the conditions necessary for cultural creation. The paper concludes that three core conditions underpin cultural creation: (1) mastery of techniques and skills, (2) support from the local environment and community, and (3) collaboration, solidarity, and followership. While these conclusions are based on a single case study, future research should treat them as hypotheses and further develop a theoretical framework by comparing similar cases involving other craftspeople and entrepreneurs. |
